Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients. Peel the potatoes beforehand. You can use cream of any fat content; richer cream will give the finished dish a creamier flavor.
Step 2
Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a heatproof baking dish with vegetable oil. Cut the peeled potatoes into rounds and arrange them evenly in the dish.
Step 3
Pour the cream over the potatoes and season with salt and spices to taste.
Step 4
Cut the tomatoes into rounds and arrange them evenly over the potatoes. Lightly season the tomatoes with salt if desired. Cover the dish with foil and bake in an oven preheated to 375°F for about 35 minutes.
Step 5
Meanwhile, coarsely grate the cheese.
Step 6
Remove the foil and check the potatoes for tenderness.
Step 7
Scatter a few small pieces of butter over the hot potatoes, then sprinkle with the grated cheese. Return the dish to the oven for another 10–20 minutes, until the potatoes are fully tender and the cheese has melted. The exact time will depend on the type of potatoes and your oven.
Step 8
Remove the casserole from the oven and serve hot. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired and serve as a side dish with meat or fish.
