Preparation
Step 1
You can use ground meat from any type or mix. I use pork and beef. Peel the potatoes in advance, rinse them, and choose cheese to your taste.
Step 2
Slice the peeled potatoes into thin slices. Keep in mind that the variety, size, and quality of potatoes affect cooking time. If you’re using a low-starch variety not meant for baking, blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes first.
Step 3
Any heatproof baking dish will work: glass, ceramic, or metal. Grease the bottom and sides with vegetable oil. Place a layer of sliced potatoes at the bottom.
Step 4
Spread sour cream over the potatoes and sprinkle with salt. Instead of sour cream, you can use plain yogurt or mayonnaise.
Step 5
Sprinkle a layer of grated cheese on top.
Step 6
Peel and finely chop the onion, then mix it with the ground meat.
Step 7
Spread a thin layer of the meat mixture over the potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and spices. Distribute a bit more grated cheese over the meat.
Step 8
Repeat all the layers again, adding grated cheese between them. While baking, the cheese will melt and bind the layers together. Generously sprinkle the top potato layer with grated cheese. Place the dish in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 45-60 minutes. Adjust based on your oven and doneness.
Step 9
The finished casserole will turn golden and appetizing. The cheese on top will brown nicely. Remove from the oven, garnish with herbs, and serve hot. Cut into portions and enjoy!
