Advice
To avoid eye irritation when slicing onions, rinse the onion and knife with cold water. To prevent the cutting board from absorbing onion odor, rub it with a slice of lemon before cutting. Choose firm yet juicy tomatoes. Soft ones fall apart during cutting and cooking, ruining the look of the dish. You can use any kind of meat besides pork. Just keep in mind that cooking time, taste, and calories will differ. For example, beef takes longer to cook than pork, while chicken or turkey cooks faster.
Preparation
Step 1
You can use any meat, but here we use pork. Choose boneless cuts. Peel and rinse potatoes. If you don’t have yogurt, sour cream works. I use cherry tomatoes, but regular ones are fine.
Step 2
Cut the meat into portions and lightly tenderize with a kitchen mallet. Pork ham or loin works well.
Step 3
Peel and rinse the onion with cold water, then finely chop it. Rub it with your hands so it releases its juices faster.
Step 4
Place the chopped onion in a bowl and add yogurt and mustard. Sprinkle with salt and your favorite spices. Press a couple of garlic cloves and add to the mix. I use ground pepper and dried basil.
Step 5
Mix the meat with the onion sauce and let it marinate for 30 minutes.
Step 6
Slice the potatoes into rounds and mix them with the marinated meat.
Step 7
Use any oven-safe baking dish – glass, ceramic, silicone, or metal. Grease the bottom and sides with oil. Layer the potatoes on the bottom, followed by meat and the rest of the sauce with onion.
Step 8
Add sliced tomatoes on top of the meat.
Step 9
Generously sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 45–50 minutes. Cover lightly with foil if the cheese starts browning too fast.
Step 10
The meat is ready! Remove from the oven, plate it, and serve. Enjoy your meal!
