Easy
About 10 min.
Preparation
Step 1
You can use sour cream of any fat content; I used 15%. Do not substitute butter with margarine - it’s the butter that gives a creamy aroma, while margarine adds unwanted flavors. You can use any spices or herbs (dried or fresh), mixing and changing them each time to get a different sauce flavor. This time I used paprika and black pepper.
Step 2
Peel the onions and rinse them under running water to remove any dirt. Then finely chop the peeled onions. To avoid eye irritation while chopping, rinse the onion and knife with cold water. Rub the cutting board with a slice of lemon to prevent it from absorbing onion smell.
Step 3
Place a frying pan on the stove and heat it. Add a piece of butter and let it melt.
Step 4
Add the chopped onion to the melted butter and stir. Fry the onions on low heat for 6-8 minutes. Watch the onions closely so they don’t burn. Burnt onions will ruin the taste and aroma of the sauce.
Step 5
As the onions cook, they’ll become more translucent. Add flour to the onions. Sprinkle salt, ground pepper, and paprika. The spice mix is flexible - you can change it to your taste. Stir everything well.
Step 6
Pour hot water into the pan and stir while bringing it to a boil. Adjust the water to your preferred consistency - more or less depending on how much sauce you want and how thick. You can also simmer the sauce on low to thicken it more. Feel free to experiment!
Step 7
Add sour cream. Stir and heat for another couple of minutes. Thanks to the added flour, the sauce will thicken.
Step 8
The delicious onion gravy is ready! You can serve it with any side dish or meat.
Step 9
This onion sauce goes perfectly with fried chicken and spaghetti. Enjoy your meal!
