Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients. You can use sour cream with any fat content. The richer and thicker the sour cream, the creamier the finished gravy will be.
Step 2
Peel the onion and cut it into half-rings or smaller pieces, depending on your preference. The more finely you chop the onion, the smoother the finished gravy will be.
Step 3
Heat a frying pan, add a little vegetable oil and cook the chopped onion for approximately 1 minute, until it begins to turn translucent.
Step 4
Reduce the heat and cook the onion gently for another 4–5 minutes, until softened and beginning to brown slightly.
Step 5
Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mix well. Cook for approximately 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Step 6
Add the sour cream.
Step 7
Season with salt and spices to taste. Ground pepper and a little dried basil work well, but you can use other seasonings if preferred.
Step 8
Mix everything thoroughly and heat through. Gradually add hot water until the gravy reaches your preferred consistency.
Step 9
Simmer over very low heat for 2–3 minutes, then remove the pan from the heat. Keep in mind that the gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.
Step 10
Serve the onion and sour cream gravy warm with meatballs, potatoes, rice, buckwheat, pasta or another savory dish.
