Advice
Since saltiness, sweetness, bitterness, spiciness, acidity, and heat are individual preferences, always season to your own taste. If using a spice for the first time, remember that some - like chili pepper - should be added in moderation.
Preparation
Step 1
You can use any kind of bread: white, rye, or black. For the most aromatic croutons, use Borodinsky rye bread. Choose refined, neutral oil (sunflower or olive).
Step 2
Cut the bread into long, even sticks. For more uniform pieces, trim the crusts to form square or rectangular shapes. You can also cut into cubes or thin strips.
Step 3
In a deep bowl, pour in the vegetable oil. Peel the garlic cloves and press them into the oil using a garlic press. Adjust the amount of garlic to taste. Add salt and ground black pepper. Optionally, include other spices or herbs.
Step 4
Mix the oil and seasonings with a fork to distribute the garlic evenly. Add the bread sticks to the bowl and toss by hand so every piece is coated.
Step 5
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the bread pieces in a single layer to ensure even roasting. Place into a preheated oven at 356°F (180°C).
Step 6
After 7-10 minutes, remove the tray, stir the croutons, and return to the oven without turning off the heat. Bake for another 7 minutes or until golden and crisp. Time may vary based on your oven and bread size. Transfer to a plate.
Step 7
Serve and enjoy! Perfect with a cold beer.
