Easy
About 20 min.
Preparation
Step 1
Use any black bread - with yeast or unleavened. Sunflower oil can be refined and odorless or first-pressed for more aroma. You can also use olive oil.
Step 2
Cut off the crusts. If pre-sliced, cut into long sticks. If whole, slice about 0.4 in (1 cm) thick, then cut into sticks.
Step 3
In a bowl, combine 1 tbsp vegetable oil and pressed garlic cloves. Mix well and let the garlic oil infuse. You can use flavored store-bought oil with garlic and basil instead.
Step 4
Heat the remaining 1 tbsp (or more) vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add bread and fry on both sides until golden brown.
Step 5
Transfer the fried bread sticks to a bowl, pour garlic oil over, sprinkle with salt, and mix. Use coarse sea salt or fine table salt, plus optional spices or dried herbs.
Step 6
Place the bread on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Step 7
Serve garlic croutons with beer or as a snack. Enjoy!
