Preparation
Step 1
How do you make turmeric rice for a side dish? Prepare all the ingredients. Choose good-quality rice. It can be either short-grain or long-grain rice, depending on your preference. Use natural butter with at least 82% fat. I used dried ground turmeric, but you can also use fresh turmeric root and grate it.
Step 2
Rinse the rice well under running water. To make the rice fluffy, you need to wash off the starch, so rinse it until the water runs clear. A sieve works best for this. Choose rice with a lower starch content, as that kind of rice will turn out fluffier.
Step 3
Prepare the pot in which you will cook the rice. Even if it seems like there is not much rice, keep in mind that it will almost double in size during cooking, so choose a larger pot. Pour filtered or bottled water over the rice, using the ratio of 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water.
Step 4
Salt the rice. I use coarse sea salt, but regular table salt will also work.
Step 5
Place the pot over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Foam will form on the surface, and you should skim it off so the water stays clear. Then reduce the heat to the lowest setting, cover the pot with a lid, and cook for 10–20 minutes without lifting the lid. The exact time will depend on the type of rice. I cooked mine for 20 minutes. It is important to cook it over very low heat, otherwise the rice may burn.
Step 6
Add the turmeric. It is a very brightly colored powder and will give the rice a beautiful vivid color. Stir the rice thoroughly.
Step 7
Add the butter, stir the rice, cover the pot with the lid, and turn off the heat.
Step 8
This rice is perfect as a side dish for fish, poultry, and meat. It can also be used in salads. Enjoy your meal!
