Preparation
Step 1
Begin by cooking the pasta in a large pan of boiling water, following the package instructions. Just before the pasta is fully cooked, add broccoli florets to the same pot and cook together for the last 2-3 minutes, until both are just tender.
Step 2
While the pasta and broccoli are cooking, make the cheese sauce. In a separate pan, heat the butter, flour, and milk over medium heat, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens into a smooth, glossy roux.
Step 3
Continue stirring for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Stir in half of the grated cheese until fully melted and season the sauce with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Step 4
Preheat the grill to its highest setting. Drain the cooked pasta and broccoli, then transfer to a warm, shallow ovenproof dish. Flake the tuna evenly over the top, then pour the cheese sauce over the entire mixture, making sure everything is well-covered. If using, layer tomato slices on top and finish with the remaining cheese.
Step 5
Place the dish under the hot grill for 4-5 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling. Serve immediately for a warm, satisfying meal.
