About 1 hour.
Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients. Warm the milk to about 97°F; it should feel pleasantly warm, not hot. Add the sugar, salt and dry yeast to the milk and stir until the sugar and salt dissolve. Adjust the amount of sugar to taste if desired.
Step 2
Add the egg to the yeast mixture and whisk until evenly combined.
Step 3
Pour in the vegetable oil and mix. Sift the flour to remove any lumps.
Step 4
Gradually add the flour to the liquid ingredients, mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add it in portions so the dough does not become too stiff or heavy.
Step 5
When the dough becomes too thick to mix comfortably in the bowl, transfer it to a work surface and knead by hand for about 15 minutes, until smooth and elastic. You may need slightly more or less flour depending on its absorbency.
Step 6
Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel and leave in a warm place for about 1 hour. Avoid placing it next to very strong heat, as excessive warmth can interfere with the yeast.
Step 7
After about 1 hour, the dough should have roughly doubled in volume. Gently punch it down, then shape and bake the buns or hand pies as desired.
