Preparation
Step 1
How do you make a quick cabbage appetizer? First, prepare the ingredients from the list. Besides the spices listed, you can use any seasonings you like. You can also make this recipe with cauliflower or broccoli. Use any vegetable oil suitable for frying.
Step 2
Cut the cabbage leaves into medium pieces. Trim off the tough white base from each leaf. If you want the leaves tender and soft rather than crunchy, either blanch them in boiling water for 5 minutes or microwave them for 2–3 minutes.
Step 3
Now make the batter. In a bowl, combine mayonnaise and a large egg. Add flour, salt, and pepper. If the eggs are small, use 2.
Step 4
Mix thoroughly, breaking up all lumps. The batter should be thick enough to cling to the cabbage leaves and not run off like water. If it’s too thick, thin it with 1-2 tbsp water or milk. If it’s too thin, add a little more flour.
Step 5
Dip the cabbage leaves in the batter on all sides.
Step 6
Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the battered cabbage. Fry for about 1 minute per side until golden. You may need to cover the skillet with a lid while frying, because as cabbage releases juice the oil can splatter.
Step 7
You can serve a tasty sauce with the appetizer. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, garlic pressed through a garlic press, and chopped herbs. Mix well. If you like, add your favorite spices. You can make the sauce ahead so it has time to develop flavor. Any other sauce you like also works.
Step 8
Transfer the finished cabbage appetizer to a plate and serve with the sauce. Enjoy!
