Puff Pastry Roll with Poppy Seeds

Very quick, easy, tasty, and beautiful! Puff Pastry Roll with Poppy Seeds is much faster to prepare than one made with regular yeast dough, especially when using ready-made dough. The preparation mainly involves soaking the poppy seeds. The roll turns out soft with a generous amount of aromatic, delicious filling.

Preparation
Step 1
You can use ready-made dough or make it yourself. Thaw ready dough in advance by placing it from the freezer to the bottom shelf of the refrigerator - this thawing method is the gentlest, which is especially important when working with yeast dough.
Step 2
Start preparing the filling. Put the poppy seeds into a saucepan and pour boiling water over them. Use twice as much water as poppy seeds. You can leave the poppy seeds to soak for 30 minutes or, to speed up the process, simmer them on low heat for 15 minutes.

I decided to simmer the poppy seeds. After 15 minutes, drain any remaining water if there is any. In my case, all the water was absorbed. Let the poppy seeds cool slightly.

Then grind the poppy seeds in a mortar or blend them with a blender.

Finely chop the walnuts with a knife. To enhance their aroma, you can toast the nuts briefly in a dry skillet.
Step 6
Add the chopped walnuts and honey to the ground poppy seeds. It’s also very tasty to add soaked raisins.
Step 7
Place the dough on a floured work surface. Roll it out into a rectangular sheet about 3-5 mm thick. Usually, ready puff pastry rolls better in one direction - you’ll notice this as you work with it. Roll in that direction to get a rectangle.

Spread the filling evenly over the dough with a spoon.

Roll the dough into a roll, pinching the edge to seal.
Step 10
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the roll on it in a ring shape, joining the ends.

Make shallow cuts around the outer circle with a sharp knife.
Step 12
Beat an egg with a fork. Brush the top of the roll with the egg using a pastry brush.
Step 13
Preheat the oven to 200°C (about 400°F). Bake the roll for 20-30 minutes until golden brown. The exact time depends on your oven and the thickness of the roll. After baking, remove the roll from the oven and let it cool.
