Preparation
Step 1
How do you prepare plum and apple jam for winter? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. You can use any apples: the sweeter the variety, the sweeter the jam, and vice versa. For plums, it is best to use Hungarian-style prune plums, not too large and with pits that separate easily. I used regular white sugar, but you can also use brown sugar, which will add a caramel note, or coconut sugar, which will give a light coconut aroma.
Step 2
Wash the apples, remove the seed cores, and cut them into thin slices. In principle, cutting them into cubes also works for jam, so cut them in any way that is convenient for you.
Step 3
Wash the plums and remove the pits. If your plums are small, you can leave them in halves. Mine were large, so I cut them the same way as the apples: into slices of exactly the same size.
Step 4
Place the sliced apples and plums into a pot for cooking the jam. Ideally, use a pot with a thick bottom.
Step 5
Cover the fruit with sugar and leave it to stand for 2 to 12 hours. There is no need to add water, as there will be enough juice.
Step 6
When the fruit releases its juice, it is the right time to add any spices. I make classic jam without additions, but different flavorings work very well here. For example, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger pair beautifully with apples and plums. Or perhaps a spoonful of cocoa powder? It will give the finished jam a chocolate flavor. Choose what you like.
Step 7
Bring the fruit and sugar to a boil over low heat.
Step 8
Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 40–45 minutes. The exact time depends on the pot you use and the features of your stove. Do not forget to remove the foam that appears on the surface.
Step 9
Since we are preparing the jam for winter, the jars need to be sterilized. I put a spoon into the jar and pour in a little boiling water, then drain the boiling water after 10 minutes. You can also sterilize jars in the microwave or oven. The lids only need to be boiled.
Step 10
Spoon the jam into the prepared jars.
Step 11
Close the jars with lids. This jam can be stored in ordinary room conditions. No refrigerator is needed.
Step 12
Apple and plum jam is perfect for tea time or for baking. Enjoy!
