Preparation
Step 1
How do you fry tasty hake in a pan? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. Hake is not a very bony fish, so you can use either hake fillets or steaks. Of course, it is better to use chilled fish, as it contains more nutrients than frozen fish. If you only have frozen hake, thaw it properly: move it from the freezer to the refrigerator at +5°C / 41°F, and only then leave it at room temperature.
Step 2
Rinse the fish well and pat it dry. If needed, remove any membranes and extra bones. If the pieces are large, cut them into medium-sized pieces.
Step 3
I used wheat flour. However, you can also use rice, buckwheat, or corn flour; each time the fish will have a new flavor thanks to a different flour coating. Mix the flour with the salt. At this stage, you can also add other herbs and seasonings to the flour, but only dried ones. Pepper and garlic powder are suitable for those who like a little heat, while thyme and rosemary are good for those who enjoy a more refined flavor.
Step 4
Coat each piece of fish well in the flour mixture on all sides.
Step 5
Heat the vegetable oil well in a pan. It can be any kind: inexpensive sunflower or corn oil, or more expensive olive oil. However, the oil must be refined so it does not burn during frying. It is best to use a non-stick pan or a cast-iron pan, like mine. Otherwise, the crisp coating may stick to the pan. Also make sure no moisture gets into the hot oil, or there will be a lot of splattering.
Step 6
Fry the fish over medium heat for 5–7 minutes on each side. Fish cooks quickly, and this time is usually enough for it to cook through. Enjoy!
