Preparation
Step 1
How to bake potato gratin in the oven? Gather the necessary ingredients. It’s best to cut the cold butter into small pieces in advance. I strongly recommend using nutmeg - it gives the dish a unique aroma.
Step 2
Grate the cheese on a coarse grater. Use any cheese, as long as it melts well.
Step 3
Wash, peel, and slice the potatoes into thin rounds about 2 mm thick.
Step 4
Grease a small deep baking tray or baking dish with butter. I left a few small pieces on the bottom so the potatoes wouldn’t stick while baking.
Step 5
Arrange part of the potato slices in the dish, overlapping like roof shingles, in one layer. Season the potatoes with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. For convenience and even seasoning, mix the spices together in a small bowl first.
Step 6
Pour some of the cream over the potatoes - about 2-3 tbsp.
Step 7
Sprinkle with grated cheese.
Step 8
Add the next layer of potatoes, season again, drizzle with cream, and sprinkle with cheese. Repeat the layers until you run out of potatoes, cream, and cheese. Scatter the butter pieces on top.
Step 9
Bake the potato gratin in a preheated 180°C / 356°F oven for about 50 minutes. If the top has browned but the dish isn’t cooked through yet, cover the dish with foil. Serve the finished gratin hot, cut into portions. Enjoy!
