Preparation
Step 1
How do you bake onion bread in the oven at home? Prepare the necessary ingredients. Olive oil can be replaced with regular sunflower oil.
Step 2
Peel the onion and chop it as finely as possible. To keep the onion from irritating your eyes while chopping, rinse both the onion and the knife with cold water.
Step 3
Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet and fry the onion in it until golden. Keep the heat very low so the onion does not burn.
Step 4
Add the sugar and yeast to the warm water. Stir, cover with a towel, and leave for 10 minutes so the yeast can activate. The water should not be hot, otherwise the yeast will die. After that time, a foamy cap should appear on the surface. This means the yeast has activated and is ready to work. If not, you will need to use different yeast.
Step 5
Add the salt, oil, and sifted flour to the water with the yeast. Sifting aerates the flour, which makes the finished bread fluffier and softer. Knead the dough first with a fork, then with your hands. If the dough seems too stiff, add a little more warm water.
Step 6
Halfway through kneading, add the fried onion to the dough.
Step 7
Continue kneading the dough until smooth. It will no longer be as sticky as it was at the beginning. Shape the dough into a ball.
Step 8
Cover the bowl with the dough with a towel and leave it in a warm place for 30-40 minutes. It will rise and double in volume.
Step 9
Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape the loaf. To do this, pinch the edges from the outside toward the center, then turn it seam side down and roll it gently with circular motions.
Step 10
Transfer the shaped loaf to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a towel and leave for 20 minutes. The loaf will grow slightly. Make slashes on top with a sharp knife so the bread does not burst while baking. Turn the oven on to 220°C (425°F).
Step 11
Bake the bread in a preheated oven for the first 10 minutes at 220°C (425°F), then reduce the temperature to 180°C (350°F) and bake for another 40–50 minutes. The exact time depends on your oven. The crust should become nicely browned. Cool the homemade onion bread on a wire rack. Enjoy your meal!
