About 10 min.
Preparation
Step 1
Use any oats you prefer - quick-cooking or traditional. I used 5-minute oats. The milk can be of any fat content, as long as it’s natural and flavorful. You can use fresh or frozen berries - no need to thaw them first. Any berry mix works.
Step 2
Pour milk into a saucepan (preferably thick-bottomed and non-enamel). Heat over medium heat (about 180°F / 82°C) until it begins to boil. Add sugar, salt, and oats. Stir, reduce heat to low, and cook the porridge, stirring occasionally.
Step 3
If using frozen berries, add them a few minutes after the oats start cooking. If fresh, add them at the end. I used strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries - but any seedless berries are fine. If the berries are tart, add a bit more sugar.
Step 4
Simmer on low heat until the oats are soft and the porridge thickens (follow the cooking time on the oatmeal package). Stir occasionally. When done, turn off the heat and add butter.
Step 5
Mix well, cover, and let it sit for about 10 minutes - the oatmeal will absorb the butter and become creamier. Serve warm.
Step 6
Serve your oatmeal with a drizzle of honey and a handful of walnuts or almonds. You can also add chia seeds and sprinkle coconut flakes. For a cold version, chill it and layer with natural yogurt and fresh berries. Kids will love it with fruit purée or caramelized bananas. Experiment with toppings for a new flavor every day!
