Preparation
Step 1
How do you make mulled white wine? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. Use a good-quality wine; anything from dry to semi-sweet will work. The lemon and orange should be fresh, and you may also use other fruits if you like - apples and pears work very well. I use whole dried spices rather than ground ones because they are much more aromatic. In principle, you can use ground spices too, but then the finished drink will need to be strained through a fine sieve.
Step 2
Pour the wine into a saucepan for making mulled wine and add the spices, either whole or ground. The spices can vary completely as well. If you like more intensely spiced drinks, you can replace or add to the ones I suggest. Vanilla or vanilla sugar, ginger (ground or fresh root), nutmeg, and cloves all work very well for mulled wine. Use your own taste as a guide.
Step 3
Add sugar to taste. Do not overdo the sugar. Pay attention to what kind of wine you are using. If the wine is semi-sweet, you will need less sugar or none at all. If it is dry, you can add a little more sweetness. Although, to my taste, even dry wine can do without sugar.
Step 4
Wash the lemon and orange well. It is best to use a brush, since they will be used together with the peel. I also recommend washing the fruit with very hot water, because then the citrus will release more juice into the drink. Cut the lemon into half-slices.
Step 5
Cut the orange into half-slices as well.
Step 6
Add the sliced fruit to the saucepan with the wine. Place the mixture over low heat so it warms gradually.
Step 7
As soon as the first bubbles appear, remove the mulled wine from the heat. Cover the saucepan with a lid and let the mulled wine infuse and cool slightly for 10 minutes. Then strain the finished drink. You can use a colander, or if you used ground spices, strain it through a fine sieve or cheesecloth.
Step 8
It is very tasty both hot and cold. Enjoy your drink!
