Step 1
How can you easily make the best homemade hot dog buns? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. Take the egg out of the refrigerator in advance so it can come to room temperature. If you do not have time for that, warm it in warm water for about 5-10 minutes.

How should you prepare the milk? Warm the milk to 37-38°C (98.5-100.5°F). It should feel noticeably warm, but absolutely not hot. The yeast will activate in the milk, but at a higher temperature it will die. Add the sugar and yeast to the milk and stir. Cover the cup with milk with a napkin and leave it for 15 minutes.

How do you know the yeast is active? During this time, the yeast in the warm sweet milk should wake up, bubble, and rise with a foamy cap. That means it is fresh and active. If that does not happen, use different yeast, because the dough will not rise with this one.

How should you prepare the flour? Take a large bowl. Sift the flour into it through a sieve. Sifting fills the flour with air, which makes the baked goods fluffier and softer.
Step 5
How do you add the liquid ingredients to the flour? Add salt to the flour and stir. Make a well in the center of the flour and pour the yeast mixture into it. Lightly beat the egg with a fork in a separate bowl and pour it in next. Be prepared that you may need a little more or less flour. Focus not on the exact amount, but on the desired dough consistency.

How should you knead the dough for hot dog buns and what consistency should it have? Start kneading the dough first with a spoon, then, when it becomes hard to stir, knead it by hand or with a mixer. The dough is very sticky, but do not add more flour. The softer the dough, the airier the buns will turn out. Because flour from different producers behaves differently, you may need a little less or a little more. But I do not recommend adding too much flour, because the dough can become too heavy and the buns will not be airy.

How do you add vegetable oil to the dough? When all the flour has combined with the liquid ingredients, add the vegetable oil. Kneading will become easier, but the dough will still be sticky.

How long should you knead the dough? Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes, because the final dough consistency also depends on this. It should become smooth. Gather the dough into a ball. Cover the bowl with a towel, plastic wrap, or a lid and put it in a warm place. Leave it to rise for about 30-60 minutes.
Step 9
How do you know the dough has risen well? After the required time, the dough will double in size. To give the oven enough time to heat up to the right temperature, turn it on in advance, about 10-20 minutes before baking.

How do you divide the dough into pieces? Place it on a lightly floured work surface and divide it into 8 parts. Round each part by pinching the edges to the center like a little pouch, then turn it seam-side down and roll it with circular movements to form a ball.

How do you shape the hot dog buns? Take one piece. Flatten it with your fingers into an oval shape.

How do you make the first edge seal? Pinch one edge about 1 cm (0.4 inch). Seal the edges of the buns very well so that they do not open up during baking.

How do you make the second seal on the same edge? Pinch that same edge one more time. The double seal will make the seam stronger and prevent the bun from opening during baking.

How do you seal the opposite edge of the bun? Turn the piece over and pinch the other edge in exactly the same way. First do it once, forming a symmetrical piece.

How many times should you pinch the second edge? Then pinch that same edge a second time so the shape is secured from the other side just as firmly as from the first.

How do you join the edges to make a long roll? Only now join the edges of the piece by pinching them together in the middle. You will get a long, neat, elongated roll of the correct shape.

How do you even out the shaped buns? You can roll each piece a little on the work surface to even out the shape and smooth possible irregularities. Then shape all the remaining buns in the same way.

How do you prepare the baking sheet and place the buns on it? Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the buns on it, leaving space between them.

How do you prepare the soft buns for baking? Cover the baking sheet with a towel and leave the buns to rise for another 30 minutes. They will grow a little.

How do you bake airy hot dog buns in the oven? Bake the buns in an oven preheated to 200°C (392°F), top-and-bottom heat, for about 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool the finished buns completely on a rack and use them as intended.

How do you serve and store delicious hot dog buns? You can cut the bun, put a sausage inside, and add your favorite sauces and fillings, from classic mustard and ketchup to pickles, onion, and bacon. Before baking, you can also decorate the buns by sprinkling them with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or seeds of your choice. These buns are suitable for both French and Danish hot dogs. Store the fully cooled buns covered for up to 3-4 days.
