Easy
About 30 min.
Preparation
Step 1
This recipe works with both frozen and fresh cabbage rolls, store-bought or homemade. Besides salt, you can use other spices to taste.
Step 2
Defrost the cabbage rolls by removing them from the freezer 2-3 hours before cooking. This ensures even heating, perfect texture, juiciness, and flavor. The filling can be mixed pork-beef or with chicken.
Step 3
Peel and finely grate the carrot.
Step 4
Chop dill finely. If you don’t have fresh dill, use dried or substitute with another herb.
Step 5
Place the cabbage rolls into a heavy-bottomed pot. Sprinkle grated carrot and salt on top.
Step 6
Pour in enough water to cover the cabbage rolls. Place on the stove and simmer over low heat for about 50 minutes.
Step 7
While they cook, prepare the gravy. The exact amount of water depends on the desired thickness and the density of your tomato paste. You can substitute tomato paste with ketchup or canned tomatoes.
Step 8
In a dry skillet, toast the flour over low heat until golden and nutty in aroma. Stir constantly - it won’t change color at first, but once it starts, it can burn in under a minute.
Step 9
Add tomato paste and stir well.
Step 10
Pour in hot water and vegetable oil, stirring until smooth. Simmer on low until thickened. The gravy should be thick but pourable.
Step 11
Pour the tomato gravy into the pot with the cabbage rolls. Add the chopped herbs. Cook together for another 5-10 minutes.
Step 12
Serve the cabbage rolls hot with sour cream and the tomato gravy. Enjoy!
