Keep in mind that ovens vary. Temperature and baking time may differ from those specified in the recipe.
Preparation
Step 1
Sift the flour in advance to aerate it. Sifting helps the dough rise better and makes the final bread softer and lighter. Use warm water (95-102°F / 35-39°C). Yeast becomes more active in a warm environment.
Step 2
Pour the warm water into a large bowl and add salt, sugar, and yeast. Stir. To add extra flavor, you can mix in spices or dried herbs. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
Step 3
Next, pour vegetable oil into the bowl.
Step 4
Gradually add the flour while kneading the dough. You might need a bit more or less flour than specified, so judge by the dough’s consistency.
Step 5
The dough should be soft and elastic, and hardly stick to your hands. To prevent the dough from absorbing excess flour and to keep it from sticking, grease your hands with vegetable oil and coat the dough all over. Cover the dough with a towel and place it in a warm spot for one hour.
Step 6
During this time, the dough will increase in size. Punch it down gently.
Step 7
Place the dough into a baking pan greased with vegetable oil. If you don’t have a pan, you can place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In that case, the bread will be round. Let the dough rest in the pan for another 15-20 minutes. It will rise slightly and then it’s ready to go into the oven. Bake the white bread in an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C) for about 40 minutes. Keep an eye on your oven for the exact time.
Step 8
The finished homemade bread will increase in size and take on a lovely golden color. Remove it from the pan, wrap it in a towel, and let it cool. Enjoy your treat!
