Preparation
Step 1
You can use any onions - regular white or red. The recipe is calculated for large bulbs; smaller ones will bake for a shorter time. Use neutral refined oil, such as sunflower or olive oil. Instead of fresh sprigs (rosemary or thyme), you can use dried herbs and spices to taste. Preheat the oven to 190°C (about 375°F).
Step 2
Cut the tops off the onions and remove the peel. Do not cut off the very bottom where the roots grow yet, otherwise the onion will fall apart. Cut it off at the very end, without touching the onion flesh around it. Rinse the peeled onions and then pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels.
Step 3
Make deep cross-shaped cuts in each onion, not reaching the base. Gently open the cuts a little. Tear off three long pieces of foil and fold each in half. Place an onion in the center of each piece. Fold the edges of the foil up, but do not seal completely yet. Sprinkle the onions on top with salt and pepper. Drizzle with vegetable oil. Stick a sprig of rosemary or thyme into each onion.
Step 4
Now wrap the onions completely, trying to avoid any holes in the foil. Place the resulting foil “balls” into a baking dish.
Step 5
Bake the onions in the preheated 190°C (375°F) oven for about 1 hour. The exact time will depend on your oven and the size of the onions. Check for doneness by slightly opening the foil - the onions should be soft.
Step 6
Serve the onions baked in foil in the oven at the table. Enjoy your meal!
