Preparation
Step 1
I use store-bought puff pastry without yeast, but you can make it yourself. Ready-made pastry is sold frozen, so thaw it in advance by moving it from the freezer to the lower shelf of the fridge - this way the process is more delicate.
Step 2
Prepare the filling for the apples. Chop peeled walnuts in any way you prefer - in a mortar, with a blender, or with a knife. To make them more aromatic, toast them in a dry skillet before chopping.
Step 3
Mix the chopped nuts with honey. You can also add raisins, cinnamon, or lemon zest to the filling.
Step 4
Wash and dry the apples. The best varieties for baking are autumn types. Use a knife and spoon to remove the core with seeds from the stem side.
Step 5
Fill the apples with the nut-honey mixture.
Step 6
Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Puff pastry tends to stretch in one direction, so roll it that way. You should get a rectangle about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick. Cut it into two squares. Place one stuffed apple in the center of each square. Cut the corners so that you get a four-pointed star.
Step 7
Gather the ends of the star over the apple, twist them to form the apple’s stem. From the leftover pastry, cut out leaves (I used a special cutter). Place them near the "stem." Prepare the remaining apples the same way.
Step 8
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the wrapped apples on it.
Step 9
Wash and dry an egg, then crack it into a bowl. Beat it with a fork until smooth. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg using a pastry brush.
Step 10
Bake the apples in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. The exact baking time depends on your oven. Remove when done.
Step 11
Serve the apples warm or chilled. You can dust them with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy!
