Preparation
Step 1
How do you make apple slices in syrup for winter? Prepare everything you need: apples, a few sprigs of mint, and sugar. Which apples are best? Any variety works. If the apples are very sweet, add a pinch of citric acid for a brighter, more intense flavor. The amount of apples is approximate - it depends on how tightly you pack them into the jars.
Step 2
Wash the apples thoroughly and pat dry with paper towels. Slice each apple into wedges, removing the core and the stem ends.
Step 3
Wash the jars well and sterilize them in any convenient way: in the microwave, the oven, or over a water bath. Pack the apple wedges into the jars up to the top.
Step 4
Rinse the mint in clean water. Put 1-2 sprigs into each jar, depending on how strong you want the mint flavor in the finished dessert.
Step 5
Pour boiling water over the apples. Pour carefully and gradually so the jars don’t crack.
Step 6
Cover the jars with pre-sterilized lids and leave for 15-20 minutes.
Step 7
Pour the water from the apples into a small saucepan and add sugar. You need 400 g sugar per 1 liter water (that’s about 1 lb 14 oz per 4¼ cups). To avoid miscalculations, I first pour the drained water into a measuring cup and then into the saucepan. I got about 0.5 liter (about 2 cups) of water, so I added 200 g sugar (about 1 cup). Add the required amount of sugar and put the saucepan on the heat. After it comes to a boil, reduce to medium and cook until the sugar dissolves completely.
Step 8
Pour the hot syrup into the jars.
Step 9
Seal the jars with a canning key (jar sealer).
Step 10
Turn the jars upside down and keep them under a warm blanket or towel until completely cool. Store the apples in a cool, dark place for long-term storage. I keep my jars on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.
