Preparation
Step 1
Use white bread - baguette, wheat bread, or toast bread. Sweet enriched bread like brioche works great too. Adjust the sugar depending on the bread. Sometimes I skip sugar entirely and just dust the finished toast with powdered sugar.
Step 2
Crack the egg into a bowl deep enough to dip a bread slice. Add sugar and a pinch of salt for flavor balance. Beat with a fork or whisk until the sugar dissolves. Add milk and whisk again until smooth. If the egg is small, add a little more milk.
Step 3
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add vegetable oil. You can also use butter, but mix in a little vegetable oil so the butter doesn’t burn. Dip the bread slices in the egg–milk mixture on both sides and place them onto the skillet. Reduce heat to low.
Step 4
You can let the bread soak a bit longer if you prefer softer toast - just make sure the oil does not overheat while you wait.
Step 5
When one side becomes golden, flip the slices. If you’re not using a non-stick pan, heat the oil very well before adding the bread - this helps flipping. Fry until golden on the second side. Transfer finished toast to a plate.
Step 6
Serve with berries, fruit pieces, or whipped cream. You can dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with jam - in that case, skip sugar in the egg mixture. These are especially delicious warm. Enjoy!
