Step 1
How to make quick sugar buns with instant dry yeast? Prepare the ingredients and make the dough. Sift the flour into a bowl. Add instant dry yeast, salt, and sugar. Mix so the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step 2
Pour in warm water (no hotter than 104°F / 40°C). This matters because yeast activates well in warm liquid, dies in hot liquid, and won’t work in cold liquid. Start mixing with a spoon.
Step 3
When the dough thickens, pour in the vegetable oil and continue kneading. Be ready that you may need a bit more or less flour than the recipe states. Focus on the dough consistency, not the exact amount of flour. For 150 ml (about 2/3 cup) of water, I used 370 g (about 3 cups) of flour - the dough is soft, not stiff, and ends up releasing well from the sides of the bowl.
Step 4
Transfer the dough to a work surface lightly greased with oil (no need to dust with flour so you don’t dry out the dough). Knead until smooth and elastic for 7-10 minutes. Shape into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and leave in a warm place for 40 minutes to rise. I usually knead it again after 10 minutes when it becomes more pliable - then it rises even better.
Step 5
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces in any convenient way. Roll each into a small ball. No flour is needed.
Step 6
Take one ball and roll it into a round about 17 cm (about 6¾ in) in diameter, or simply press it out by hand. Lightly brush the round with vegetable oil using a silicone brush and sprinkle with sugar: 1 tablespoon sugar per round.
Step 7
Roll the round up into a log and pinch the seam.
Step 8
Join the ends of the log together to form a ring.
Step 9
Place the ring on its edge and make a cut with a knife, not cutting all the way through, as shown in the photo.
Step 10
Turn the piece inside out - this forms a layered heart. Shape buns from the remaining dough the same way.
Step 11
Place the shaped buns in a baking dish lined with parchment. I fit 4 hearts at a time.
Step 12
Bake in the oven at 180°C / 350°F for 15-20 minutes, until golden. Then bake the second batch. Let the buns cool slightly and serve - they’re great warm too. Enjoy!
