Homemade Cappuccino Without an Espresso Machine

Step 1
How to make cappuccino at home? Prepare the ingredients. Use very finely ground coffee; coarse grounds will be too harsh for this delicate drink. Choose higher-fat milk - it froths better.

First brew the espresso. You can do this in different ways. The simplest is in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot) on the stove. Put the ground coffee into the cezve, pour in clean water, and stir with a spoon. For a stronger drink, reduce the water to 60 ml (about 1/4 cup).

Place the cezve over low heat.
Step 4
Wait until foam starts to rise. Remove from the heat and wait for the foam to settle. Put it back on the heat, let the foam rise again, remove. Return it a third time and repeat. The espresso is ready.
Step 5
Now make the milk foam. Warm the milk first - cold milk won’t froth. Pour it into a small saucepan and heat to about 60°C / 140°F. How to tell? Put a drop on your wrist - it should feel clearly hot but not burning.
Step 6
Froth the milk. What to use? You can try a hand whisk - it’s possible, but slow and the foam won’t be very fluffy.
Step 7
You can use a mixer: it froths quickly, but the foam settles fast and the bubbles are larger.
Step 8
The best gadget is a milk frother. It’s made for this job. In about a minute it makes stable, fluffy foam with fine bubbles - that’s what cappuccino needs. To remove large bubbles, tap the pitcher/saucepan on the table a couple of times.
Step 9
Combine everything. Take a large cup with a wide opening and rinse it with hot water. Pour in the coffee, straining it through a small sieve to remove the grounds.
Step 10
Pour the milk into the coffee carefully in a thin stream, into the center of the cup. This helps the layers stay distinct: milk goes first, then foam. The classic cappuccino ratio is 1:1:1 - espresso : milk : foam.
Step 11
Cappuccino is ready! Serve immediately. You can dust it with ground cinnamon, chocolate, or cocoa.
