Preparation
Step 1
You can replace mint with lemon balm. The currants can be either fresh or frozen - if frozen, thaw them beforehand. Wash the lemon, pour boiling water over it, and pat dry.
Step 2
Rinse and sort the black currants, especially if they’re fresh or just picked. Remove all stems and leaves. Transfer the berries to a suitable container and mash them with a pestle until a puree forms. You can also use a blender, but avoid over-blending - too fine a texture will make straining difficult later.
Step 3
Carefully peel the zest from the lemon and add it to the crushed currants. Be sure to remove only the yellow layer of peel - the white pith underneath is bitter and can ruin the flavor of your drink.
Step 4
Add sugar to the berry mixture. The amount can be adjusted based on how sweet or tart your currants are and your personal taste preference.
Step 5
Transfer the mixture to a large glass bottle or jar for steeping. Pour in the vodka and shake well so the sugar begins to dissolve.
Step 6
For extra freshness, add a few mint leaves. Gently crush them with your hands to release their aroma. Close the bottle tightly and store it in a dark place for 5 to 20 days. After steeping, strain the liqueur through several layers of cheesecloth - your homemade black currant liqueur is ready to serve!
