Preparation
Step 1
Choose any bread you like - white, rye, whole grain, baguette, ciabatta, or panini rolls. You can use sliced or whole ham; I prefer thin pre-sliced ham since it looks elegant.
Step 2
Wash and dry the cucumber, then slice it thinly. You’ll need just a few slices, so a small cucumber will do. Taste it to ensure it isn’t bitter.
Step 3
Wash and dry the tomato, then slice it into thin rings. The thinner you slice the vegetables and ham, the easier the sandwich will be to eat.
Step 4
Prepare the sauce. Mix mayonnaise with mustard until smooth. Use sweet mustard for a milder flavor. You can also use only mayonnaise or only mustard if you prefer. Add your favorite spices to enhance the flavor.
Step 5
Spread the prepared sauce evenly over a slice of bread.
Step 6
Place tomato slices on top, laying them flat in one layer.
Step 7
Add cucumber slices, also in one layer.
Step 8
Wash and dry lettuce leaves. Layer them over the vegetables. Any type of lettuce will work - iceberg, arugula, frisée, or cress. You can also add or substitute vegetables such as radishes.
Step 9
Place slices of ham on top of the lettuce. If using thin slices, fold each one in half for a nice texture.
Step 10
Spread another thin layer of the mayonnaise–mustard sauce over the ham. The sandwich can be served open-faced, but for a neater version, add a top slice of bread.
Step 11
Cover with the second slice of bread.
Step 12
Your ham sandwich is ready. Enjoy!
