Easy
More than 1 hour.
Preparation
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Add the yeast and mix well.
Step 2
Gradually pour in warm water, stirring with a wooden spoon or whisk until you get a smooth, thick batter (similar to pancake batter).
Step 3
Cover the bowl with a clean cloth or plastic wrap.
Step 4
Place the bowl in a warm spot and let the dough rise for about 45-60 minutes, or until doubled in size and bubbly.
Step 5
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat enough vegetable oil to submerge the dough balls. The oil should reach about 170-180°C (340-360°F) - hot but not smoking.
Step 6
Use a spoon or small ice cream scoop to drop portions of batter into the hot oil.
Step 7
Fry in batches, turning occasionally, until they’re golden brown all around (about 3-4 minutes per batch). Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Step 8
Dust lightly with powdered sugar (optional). Serve warm - perfect with tea, coffee, or fresh fruit!
