Cheese Sandwich
The quickest and simplest snack - even a child can make it! A cheese sandwich is a classic American-style pan-grilled sandwich. The cheese melts from heat, and the bread turns golden and crisp. Perfect for breakfast or a fast, satisfying bite.

Preparation
Step 1
I’ll be making one sandwich, so the proportions are for a single serving. Choose natural, good-quality cheese that melts well - this is the most important part. You can grate a block of cheese, use sliced cheese, or slice it yourself. The classic version uses cheddar, but even cream cheese slices work.
Step 2
The classic recipe uses toast bread, as I do here, but you can also use baguette slices or any white or whole-grain bread. Take the butter out ahead of time to soften. Use real butter only. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice.
Step 3
Place a pan on low heat. Mine has a thick bottom and a nonstick coating. Add a tablespoon of butter and melt it. I like adding a splash of vegetable oil so the butter doesn’t burn during frying.
Step 4
Place one slice of bread in the pan, buttered side down. Add the cheese - grated or sliced - on top. Cover the pan with a lid and keep the heat very low. Wait until the cheese begins to melt.
Step 5
Once the cheese softens, cover it with the second slice of bread, buttered side up. Press down gently with a spatula so the cheese sticks to the bread.
Step 6
Check the bottom slice - if it’s golden, gently flip the sandwich and toast the other side the same way. Don’t increase the heat; butter burns quickly. Once both sides are golden, remove from the pan and serve immediately while the cheese is hot.
Step 7
If you used toast bread, cut the sandwich diagonally - this is the classic way to serve it. Enjoy!
