Step 1
In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, nutmeg, baking powder. Stir until well mixed.
Step 2
Add butter and rub into the flour until crumbly. Beat the eggs and add them in. Add vanilla. Add a little milk or water, 1 tbsp at a time, until you get a soft dough (not sticky).
Step 3
Roll the dough into long ropes (like pencils). Cut into 10-12 cm lengths. Twist each rope into a braid or knot shape - traditional atwemo shapes.
Step 4
Heat oil on medium. Fry the twists until golden brown on all sides. Remove and drain on paper towel.
Step 5
Enjoy warm or cooled. They stay crispy for days in an airtight container.
